Head injuries are an unfortunate risk of playing contact sports; however, most are mild and need time to recover fully. If you believe that your child has a head injury, bring them to Pediatrics Associates of Plainview for a concussion assessment. Our Oyster Bay Pediatrics will assess their discomfort level and advise you when it is safe to let your child back on the field.
If your child received a head injury, keep an eye out for these signs. If your child displays any of these symptoms, bring them to the doctor immediately. Even if you don’t believe a concussion occurred, a concussion assessment is essential to ensure that the injury is not severe. Oyster Bay Pediatrics can do this.
After your child has received a concussion assessment, some short-term changes to your child’s routine may be necessary until their symptoms alleviate entirely. If any activity makes your child’s symptoms worse, avoid it until symptoms ease. Keep these steps in mind as your child recovers:
Rest: In the first few days after the injury, make sure your child gets plenty of rest. Avoid physical and memory-related activities until they have reduced symptoms.
Light Activity: When your child begins to feel better, some light activity can resume. Your child can return to school, but avoid any actions that can put your child at risk of another head injury.
Moderate Activity: When your child’s symptoms are mostly gone, their regular activities can resume. Cut back on activity only if it causes symptoms to worsen.
Back to Regular Activity: Once your child can perform all of their regular activities without any concussion symptoms, they have fully recovered.
At Pediatric Associates of Plainview, we can assure you that your child will get the best possible care. Our kind and compassionate Oyster Bay Pediatrics will take a look at your child’s symptoms and develop a plan to slowly increase the activities your child can do without irritating their symptoms.
