A hearing exam is a routine part of your child’s annual physical exam. Finding issues in a child’s hearing may be difficult to detect without an exam, which is why it’s crucial to have your pediatrician check your child’s hearing during their appointment. To schedule a pediatric hearing test on Long Island, contact the Pediatric Associates of Plainview

A Step-By-Step Process Of A Pediatric Hearing Exam

We understand that a pediatric hearing exam may be frightening for children getting it for the first time. However, we can assure you that pediatric hearing exams are completely painless and aren’t scary in the slightest! To help you know what to expect exactly, we’ll explain step-by-step what happens during a pediatric hearing test on Long Island.

  1. First, your doctor will check the inside of your child’s ears using a tool called an otoscope. A magnifier on the otoscope helps your doctor get a better view of the inside of your child’s ear. Your doctor will make sure there is no earwax blocking the eardrum.
  2. Next, your doctor will perform a pure tone audiometry exam. Your child will be given a pair of headphones to wear. No sound will come out of the headphones yet.
  3. Then, your doctor will start to play various tones at different volumes and pitches through the headphones using an audiometer. Your child will be asked to raise their hand every time they hear a sound. This exam tests for any hearing loss and the extent of the hearing loss.
  4. That’s the end of the hearing exam! If your doctor notices any hearing loss, they’ll let you know after the exam concludes.

If any hearing loss was detected, your doctor will discuss what your next steps should be. More tests may be necessary to determine the extent of your child’s hearing loss.

What Types Of Physicals Does My Child Need?

pediatrician in HicksvilleWhile any child may dread a trip to the doctor’s office, it is essential to their overall health that they receive all of the necessary check-ups. It is common to be unsure about what physicals your child needs and what they may entail, especially as a first-time parent. Here at Pediatric Associates of Plainview, we offer a Pediatric Hearing Test on Long Island as well as other physical examinations necessary for tracking and determining the health of your child.

Annual Or Back To School Physical:

Yearly physicals are crucial to the health of your child and are required by any educational facility that they are attending. These examinations allow doctors to track any changes that have occurred in your child since the last visit. In addition to offering a Pediatric Hearing Test on Long Island, our pediatrician will take note of your child’s height, weight, and body mass index on growth charts during each visit to compare their development to other kids of the same age and gender. Your child’s blood pressure, hearing, and vision will also be tested. You should also be prepared to answer questions about their sleep, eating, and exercise habits. These questions will help our pediatricians gain a better understanding of your child’s overall health. Depending on their age, puberty may also be discussed. If any issues arise by the end of the examination, the next steps and solutions will be discussed.

Camp Or Sports Physical:

Does your child plan on attending summer camp or participating in sports? To get proper clearance for this, they will need to receive what is called a preparticipation physical. This examination is performed to determine if your child is healthy enough to partake in the desired activities. The two main components of a preparticipation physical examination usually include:

1. Evaluation of Medical History: History of past medical conditions, injuries, family injuries, and medications currently being taken will all be assessed during this portion of the physical.

2. Physical Examination: Height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, reflexes, flexibility, and vision will all be tested and recorded during this portion of the physical.

After the Pediatric Hearing Test on Long Island as well as other exams, our pediatrician will determine if your child is cleared to participate in the requested activities. They may also provide tips to avoid sustaining any injuries.

How Can I Prepare My Child For School This Year?

As parents, it’s your responsibility to ensure that your child is ready for the upcoming school year. While buying supplies is an essential part of this process, you must not overlook the medical aspect of preparation as well. Due to the pandemic, preparing for this school year will likely be unlike any other in recent memory. Fortunately, our team at Pediatric Associates of Planview is here to help. We’d like to inform you of what to do before the first class bell rings, as well as ways you can keep them protected throughout the year.

Annual Visit

Most children will need to undergo an annual visit to the doctor’s office before the school year starts. Doing so allows our team to continuously check your child’s development, and ensure they are healthy enough to attend school as planned. During this Pediatric Hearing Test on Long Island, the following will be assessed:

  • Vitals such as blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing.
  • Vaccination history to determine if they will need any shots before the school year.
  • Their physical development progress.
  • Whether or not they are cleared to participate in school-sanctioned sports.

Have Masks Ready

Following their appointment, it will be time for you as a parent to prepare your child for schooling. While there is still a chance that schools get closed down, and virtual learning continues, for the time being, New York has been putting plans in place for children to return to school. Should this take place, it’s important to have multiple masks ready for your child to wear, in case one becomes lost or damaged. Also, sit down with them and discuss the importance of wearing a mask.

Stress The Importance Of Safety

When children completed the remainder of their last school year at home, it was likely easy to monitor their sanitation habits. Now with them returning to school, you’ll need to gear them with the necessary information so that they can follow safety procedures. Before their first day, make sure your children understand the necessity to comply with the following:

  • Stay six feet apart from teachers and other students when possible.
  • Don’t remove the masks.
  • Always wash hands with soap for at least 20 seconds.
  • Don’t share food or drinks with friends.
  • Use hand sanitizer when it is available.
